The ninety-second ritual that separates the athlete who chokes from the one who doesn't.

Walk-out doesn't decide your day. The ninety seconds before walk-out does. Here's what to put in them.

I have a thirty-minute warm-up I never skip. Why does the actual walk-out still feel like I haven't started?

The warm-up moves your body. It does not necessarily move your nervous system into the state you want to compete from. Most athletes have a thorough warm-up and a missing ninety seconds, the window between the last drill and the first whistle, where the entire load you've been managing decides whether it stays managed or breaks through.

Priming, not calming.

The mistake is treating those ninety seconds as time to relax. You don't want relaxed. You want available. Activated enough to perform, regulated enough to read the field, present enough to make a decision faster than the part of you that wants to script it.

Ninety seconds is enough to change the state you compete from.

The protocol.

Two cyclic sighs, double-inhale through the nose, long sigh out through the mouth. One contact point, a hand to the chest, a foot pressing into the ground. One sentence said inside, the same one every time, that signals to the system that this is what we trained for. That's it. The ritual is the same every game. The repetition is the medicine.
